Chalky white on your finger? That’s caravan oxidation

Cameron Pitts · Van Lustre · 27 Oct 2026

If you wipe a clean finger or a soft white cloth across a dull panel on your caravan and it comes away with a chalky white (or coloured) residue, that isn’t “just dirt”. That’s oxidation — the surface of the gelcoat or paint breaking down under UV and weather.

It’s common across SEQ storage yards and driveways — Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast parks, same story. The Queensland sun doesn’t take weekends off, and a chalky van doesn’t get better with another bucket of wash-and-wax.

I’m Cameron from Van Lustre. I do every job myself — mobile caravan and RV exterior detailing across SEQ, public liability insured, with 15 years’ detailing experience (detailing since I was 15). This post is the honest version of what that chalk means, and which package actually fixes it.

What oxidation looks like on a van

On cars we talk about clear coat. On a lot of caravans and RVs you’re looking at gelcoat (a pigmented resin skin on fibreglass) or painted composite / aluminium panels. Gelcoat behaves a bit like old single-stage paint: colour and shine live in the same layer. It’s porous compared with modern clear coat, and in strong sun it oxidises and goes chalky.

Typical signs:

Sort the problem before you buy a bottle. Bonded grit and road film are contamination — chemistry and clay territory. Water marks and sap are deposits. Oxidation is the surface itself breaking down. Polishing (the right amount) can bring oxidised gelcoat back; waxing over chalk mostly sticks to loose pigment and looks good for a short while.

The quick home check (no tools required)

  1. Wash and dry a small patch so you’re not judging mud.
  2. Rub a clean finger or soft white cloth across the panel.
  3. If chalk comes off, treat it as oxidation until a pro says otherwise.
  4. Look at edges, high points and old repairs — those areas are often thinner and fail first.
  5. Don’t assume every white van is gelcoat. Plenty of vans have painted aluminium or composite sides. The process has to match the skin.

That’s enough diagnosis for a quote photo set. You don’t need a paint gauge in the driveway to know something’s wrong.

Why a one-day polish often isn’t enough

A light machine polish and seal — what I call Gloss Refresh — is brilliant when the van is still in good nick: dull, a bit swirly, but not chalking off on your hand. It’s roughly a one-day job. From $920 incl GST for vans up to 18 ft.

Heavy oxidation is different. You’re not “buffing dirt off”. You’re cutting back the degraded surface, refining the finish, then sealing it so you’re not leaving porous, freshly cut gelcoat bare in the sun. That’s a proper cut, polish and seal — my Full Restoration, about two days on a typical van. From $1,990 incl GST up to 18 ft (longer vans step up by length on the site).

If photos show chalk and someone sells you a one-day polish as a restoration, you’ll still see chalk — and you’ll have spent money learning that the hard way. I’d rather tell you straight from the photos which package fits.

What I do on a Full Restoration (plain English)

I won’t dump a full workshop manual here — that’s what the books are for — but the bones are the same mindset I teach in The Detailer’s Masterclass:

Big van panels heat unevenly. Decals need care. Acrylic windows are not glass — wrong solvents can craze them for good. And I never assume a roof is walkable.

SEQ reality check

Vans that live outside in SEQ take UV year-round. Storage under trees adds sap and bird mess. Coastal vans pick up salt film. None of that means your van is ruined. It means maintenance and honest packages matter more than another coat of driveway wax over chalk.

If you’re DIY-curious, The Detailer’s Masterclass: DIY Edition on Payhip covers gentle home polishing limits on cars — for a chalky caravan wall, most owners are better sending photos and letting a pro scope the cut.

What to send me for a fixed quote

A few clear photos of all sides, close-ups of the chalkiest panels, and your approximate body length (excluding the drawbar). I’ll tell you whether you’re looking at Gloss Refresh, Full Restoration, or Restore + Ceramic if you want long-term protection after the cut. Motorhomes and fifth wheels are always Cam-quoted from photos.
