How caravan gelcoat restoration works (SEQ mobile)

Cameron Pitts · Van Lustre · 27 Oct 2026

Gelcoat restoration isn’t a mystery wax. It’s surface identification, controlled cutting of oxidised material, refining for gloss, and sealing so the van isn’t left porous in the Queensland sun.

I’m Cameron from Van Lustre. Mobile caravan and RV detailing across South East Queensland — Brisbane through to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. I do every job myself — public liability insured, 15 years’ detailing experience. This is the plain-English version of how I approach chalky fibreglass vans, without pasting a whole book chapter onto the internet.

First: is it actually gelcoat?

Caravan and motorhome sides can be:

Get this wrong and you can polish painted aluminium like gelcoat and go through it. So before any machine work I (and you, looking at your own van) ask: what skin is this? If you’re not sure, photos from all sides plus a close-up of a chalky patch are enough for me to start the conversation.

What gelcoat is (short version)

Gelcoat is a pigmented resin layer on the outside of a fibreglass panel. Colour and shine live together — a bit like old single-stage paint — but it’s a different material to modern automotive clear coat.

From the trade notes I teach in The Detailer’s Masterclass:

That’s why restoration is measured and tested — not “belt it until it shines”.

The SEQ problem: sun, storage, size

Big flat walls sit in the sun. UV fades walls, dries decals, cooks seals and is hard on acrylic windows and hatches. Coastal salt and inland dust don’t help. Storage yards from Logan to Moreton Bay cook vans that only move twice a year.

None of that means every white van needs a two-day cut. It means diagnose first: dirt vs oxidation vs paint failure vs damage that detailing can’t fix (chips, delamination, leaks).

How a restoration job actually runs

Here’s the owner-facing sequence — adapted from the same principles as multi-stage correction in the Masterclass, sized for vans:

1. Quote from photos

You send length and clear photos. I match condition to package. Chalky / oxidised walls → Full Restoration (cut, polish & seal) from $1,990 incl GST up to 18 ft. If you want ceramic after the cut → Restore + Ceramic from $3,090. If it’s only dull, not chalking → Gloss Refresh from $920.

2. On site: wash and inspect

Full wash including roof access planning (I don’t walk a roof unless it’s confirmed safe). Decontaminate so we’re not grinding grit into the surface. Check seals, decals, acrylic windows, and anything that shouldn’t see aggressive chemistry or heat.

3. Test section

A representative patch, inspected in daylight. If the test doesn’t look right, we adjust before the whole wall. Photographing a test area is good practice — for you and for me.

4. Cut, then refine

Oxidation needs a cutting stage, then a polishing stage to clear haze and bring gloss. Jumping straight to wax over chalk is the classic mistake: wax sticks to loose pigment and the “shine” is brief.

5. Seal straight away

Freshly cut gelcoat is open. Protection goes on as part of the job — sealant on Full Restoration, or ceramic when you’ve booked Restore + Ceramic / New Van Ceramic.

6. Edges, decals, windows

Heat builds fast on gelcoat; corners burn first. Decals get taped or worked around — no machine over lifting edges. Acrylic windows get acrylic-safe care only (alcohols and harsh solvents can craze them).

Biggest mistakes I want you to avoid

If you’re learning the wider craft on cars, The Detailer’s Masterclass / DIY Edition on Payhip go deeper on inspection and polishing limits. For a chalky SEQ van wall, most owners are better off with a mobile pro quote than a weekend experiment on the street side of a 22-footer.

What detailing won’t fix

I don’t do gas, electrical, structural or panel repairs. Cracks, delamination, leaks, and windows that need replacing get flagged from photos where I can see them, so you can talk to a licensed repairer. Honest scope keeps everyone safer.
